Hiring these days is hard enough. And then once you do finally hire someone, in a tight labor market with a lot of competition, keeping your best employees from looking for other opportunities might be even harder. For lawn care companies, turnover is a common problem in the best of times. Fortunately, there are a few steps you can take to make your company one that employees want to stick with.

1. Competitive Pay and Benefits

It has to be said – just like you’re all about the bottom line for your business, most potential hires are all about their own personal bottom lines. Offering competitive pay and other benefits is probably the single most important thing you can do to keep your best staff from seeking out greener pastures. If you’re not sure how your numbers stack up, a good place to start is the National Association of Landscape Professionals’ Compensation Survey data. It will give you a good idea of what the numbers look like across the country.

    2.  Check Out Your Competition

    Research how and where your local competitors are advertising for jobs and what they are offering. Ditch outdated, overlong job postings on websites your potential employees aren’t visiting. And consider offering an employee referral bonus, giving people an incentive to recommend others they think would be a good fit.

    3.  Have A Polished, Professional Digital Presence

    Potential customers aren’t the only ones who are checking out your website and social channels – so are your potential employees. They’re looking to see what your company is about, how you talk about yourself, and how you talk about your existing team. A company that recognizes its existing employees (work anniversaries, milestones, birthdays, accomplishments, etc.) is always more attractive to potential hires than one that doesn’t. Celebrating your employees makes them feel like they’re an important, appreciated part of a cohesive unit.

    4.  Make Your Company A Good Place To Work

    Employees want to be proud of their workplace. If your company has a less-than-stellar reputation as a service provider, it’s likely that you have a less-than-stellar reputation as an employer as well. When they feel like they’re part of a solid team at a solid company, they’re more invested: More likely to care, more likely to work harder on your behalf, less likely to have an “it’s just a job” mentality…and less likely to walk off the job.

    5.  Use The Right Tools and Tech

    Give your staff the tools they need to succeed and chances are they will. That goes for everything from uniforms to safety devices to lawn care equipment to technology. Your staff’s day-to-day shouldn’t be made harder by outdated processes, malfunctioning equipment, or lack of communication. Give them the ability to be in constant contact with each other, the home office, and their customers in the event of last-minute additions or changes to their daily routes. Make sure they have clean, professional-looking, branded company swag to wear. Anything you can do to make their daily tasks go smoother will go a long way towards keeping them on board for the long haul.
